Numerous figures and representations of the architect, bear witness to the place that the company grants to the architect and the evolution of this profession through the ages. An exhibition, extended for a catalogue not to be missed, reflects on this epic. Discovery.
Paintings, photos, sculptures, literature, cinema, bank notes or stamps… the representations of the figure of the architect are many. They give so many clues about the place of the architect in our society, that of testimony on the evolution of the profession through the centuries. The exhibition “The architect, ” portraits and snapshots” at the Cité de l’architecture in Paris from 21 to September 4, 2017 – to extend by its magnificent and indispensable catalog eponymous published by Norma Editions, can be traced back to the epic through a number of paintings, photographs, sculptures, and other objects or posters.
“In addition to their artistic interest, these portraits have a documentary value, recalls in the introduction to Guy Amsellem, president of the Cité de l’architecture & du patrimoine. They we learn about the evolution of the social position and career of the architect at different times, the putting in scene the work – alone or in a group, in his office or in the face of its sponsor – and showing us his tools – tilting table, ruler, pencil sharpener, tee – which are also beautiful objects.”
It is also taken to look beyond the image, to peer at the stage, as much revealing about what is the architect for the one who has produced this representation… or even for the architect himself when he is its author ! As confirmed by the curator of the exhibition, Emmanuel Bréon, curator-in-chief of heritage, who also heads the book : “the figure of The architect has it changed over the centuries ? Of the powdered wig in the black T-shirt, in any case it seems that this man of the art to pay attention to his person and takes care of his look.”
He loves the art – that makes him well ! – and the fantasy, knows how to grimer as a person, the promotions of the workshops of the Fine Arts are on to something ! Some cultivate the image of the star-architect unreachable while others are not afraid of ridicule, or even… the grow !
You know it is really her story, her work, the ideas received on his or her person or his profession ? As the exhibition progresses, or pages, to unfold phrases, quotes, passing by the non-exhaustive list of architects that is real or fictitious, and in films such as the list of those who made the cover of Time magazine, or its place in the BD…
Of the great architect of the universe to the very person of the first architect…
This exhibition and this book could even be processed in Time’s Up or Trivial Pursuit dedicated to, something to feed a very good night in any case : we don’t miss a second to browse through the pages !
