Tadao Ando unveils his project for the Pinault Collection at the Bourse du Commerce

Picked by François Pinault to prepare for the new exhibition of its contemporary art collection to the Bourse du Commerce, Paris, the self-taught architect Tadao Ando has unveiled its project : a cylinder of concrete nestled in the hollow of the huge atrium of the historic building. In all, 3,000 m2 of exhibition spaces lined with a 300-seat auditorium. Discovery.
The qualifiers have not missed the mayor of Paris, nor to the art collector François Pinault to describe the architectural project, which must take place at the center of the Bourse du Commerce, rue du Louvre (1st arrondissement of the capital). Designed by Tadao Ando – which had already participated in the projects of François Pinault in Venice (Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana) – yet it is quite simple : follow a hollow cylinder of concrete in the heart of a building dating back to the 19th century, under an impressive canopy of 35 meters of height.

Anne Hidalgo said : “I welcome the quality and beauty of the project that is presented to us today by the architects and implementers (…) The cylinder designed by Tadao Ando, will be an exhibition place a privileged (…) In creating a dialogue between heritage and innovation, by focusing on the light, the height of the ceiling and the fluidity, architectural project, fully embodies the vision of the art and the culture that bears François Pinault, and that is to respond to this that I defend to Paris“. For its part, the billionaire replied : “The choice of Tadao Ando has established itself as a highlight. Tadao Ando is one of the few architects to reconcile with subtlety, the dialogue between architecture and its context, the past and the present, the radical and the discretion, as he has shown with flying colors in Venice“.

Concretely, the cylinder wall smooth, pierced with four openings that are identical, is inscribed in the circular plan of the Bourse du Commerce and helps to create a gallery-corridor between its outer wall and the inner wall of the facade, designed by Blondel. In the new space thus created, insert the staircases that serve two levels of exhibition halls and the auditorium of 300 seats, created in the basement. The japanese architect says : “My intention is to make a chain with the force of sequences of spaces very variety arising from the combination of the rotunda and the cylinder. The existing space and the new creating a place full of life, fit to carry the banner of urban culture for generations to come“. The project aims to secure the maximum space for the programming and the reception of the public by reducing to a minimum the offices, technical areas and reserves.
